CHAINS : I think playing at Sweden Rock Festival is the dream of every Swedish rock/metal-band
1) To begin with, tell us the story of your band. How did you get to know each other, how did you come up with the idea to set up a band? Why did you pick up the name “Chains” for the band? All members except for myself (Matt) lived in and around the same small town and went to the same school and eventually ended up in the same band. Martin started the band way back in 2003 and then the rest dropped in one by one, Gabby was first, then Anthony and at last Jason. Then in late 2006 I got to know them through a friend right after they had fired their old bassplayer, so I stepped in and obviously got stuck there! The name Chains was actually just a name-drop from our old name, nothing deeper than that! 2) Can you name a special trait of Chains, typical for your band only? Well I'd say our songs of course! We do sound like ourselves and no one else, that's for sure, but I think it's hard to put a finger on what it really is that makes our sound, I suggest that everyone should listen to our songs and find out themselves. I mean sure we have some ingredienses that we use to get the songs where we want them to go, but no one is more important than the other so I'd say the combination of them together with the way we play as a band. 3) Your sound is a mixture of the sound of the 80s and the modern sound. Why did you decide to combine with the 80s in particular? What attracts you in that period of time? Everything! The bands, the songs, the musicians, the lifestyle, the attitude - the ENERGY! There's just something really magical with 80's rock and metal, it has so much energy and most songs are great! So what we're doing is that we're trying to take all that energy and putting it into our own songs to make something new and modern of it! 4) The mood of the song much depends on how the author of the lyrics feels at the moment of writing. Do you need any special mood for songwriting? How do you create the songs and what inspires you? Sure you always have to be inspired, you can't just force good music out of yourself, so you have to find the right mood, absolutely! When we're writing in Chains we do a lot of the work together when we rehearse, someone brings an idea and then we all try to contribute to it with different ideas, I think that is what makes a lot of our sound, that we all are involved in the process. I'm sure that there are specific things that can inspire but I don't think of them, it just comes naturally when you're in the mood, you never think of what might have inspired you to make this song, at least not during the whole process, maybe afterwards. 5) What topics do you like to deal with most of all in your songs? Well, all our songs tend to involve love in one way or another, that is what comes out naturally. As with the music you need inspiration to write lyrics, you don't always have to be in the same mood as the lyrics deal with, sometimes it just comes naturally, but you have to find some kind of "song-writing mood" to get really focused on the writing. 6) What do you like more: to play live or to record in the studio? Tough one! If we'd be recording as much as we play live I'm sure I'd choose playing live, cause after all that's what this is all about, but since we don't record very often I think I'll go for that one, there is always something really special when you're in a studio for several days working after a really tight schedule and trying to make the best out of everything. In live-shows everything just happens and then it's done but in the studio it's gonna be there forever so you have to look really critical on everything to make it as good as possible! 7) In which city of the world would you like to perform most of all and why? I'd say anywhere as long as people show up to support us! 8) Would you like to record a song in your mother tongue? Interesting, never thought about that. I don't think we'll do it within the next few years but maybe when we get older, it would definitely put a new face on our music! 9) Let’s speak about Nordic Challenge. What do you think about the festival and what do you expect from it? I think playing at Sweden Rock Festival is the dream of every Swedish rock/metal-band so what can I say, it feels fantastic! When the Nordic Challenge started I could never imagine that we'd win the whole thing and to be honest I didn't care either cause I really didn't think we'd have a chance! Then when I saw that we were on the top 10 list I realized that there maybe was a chance after all so I told all our friends and fans to vote and told them to tell everybody else and so on. It was sad that there was so much cheating going on so I liked when they closed the voting and let a jury decide, and then we won! Amazing! As for the festival I think it's gonna be really really great and we're gonna work our asses of during this spring to make our show the best of them all, that's a promise! 10) Could you say a couple of words to our magazine? We appreciate that you're interested in our band and we hope to come playing for you some day!
