AxiA: We work really a lot!
The Italian band DNR has had many changes in the past years. And now their career is finally in full swing. Recently they’ve preseneted a long-awaited single and video for «Beyond This World» to their fans and now are busy promoting it. Bizarre Music met with DNR’s lead singer AxiA during his visit in Moscow and discussed a lot of things with him.
Let’s start from talking about the single «Beyond This World». It’s finally out... Finally! It’s been a long-long time. We’ve changed many things. We had few changes with our line-up, but in the end we found our new producer who is really a great producer - I mean, he worked with Tom Jones. So, we decided to cooperate together. We put a lot of time but in the end it came out. I hope our fans and many new fans like it. The video came out on 20th of January. It’s about one girl who tries to discover us. It’s really hard to explain.
And how did the song itself was born? In reality it’s a little bit off time but we, thanks to this new producer, had to change it and make it more modern, to change the sound a little bit from the original. Thanks to the experience of this man the new song sounds really strong, it’s high drive music. This first single is more rock than what we usually have.
Speaking about the full-length album. When can we expect it? Well, we’re working at it with the new producer. We’ve already started to record it. We’ll release it as soon it’s ready and of course soon we hope to shoot the second video. We record the songs as usual - I’m the last because vocals always come last. When the song is ready, we try to make a remix and so on.
Which songs will be included in the album? New ones, old ones? There’ll be songs which every fan of DNR has already heard. But of course there’ll be some brand-new songs you’ve never heard before. We never stopped to write music and we have a few new songs which we all really-really-really like. We can’t make an album of 20 songs. There’ll be 10 or 12 - I don’t know how many songs we will record. And then we’ll try to give you all the best we can.
What’s the philosophy of the album? Of course it’s the always the same - Eurovisual. European sound is mixed with Japanese and oriental music. So it never changes because that’s what represents this band.
What can we expect from you in terms of sound? As every Japanese band where we take inspiration, it’s hard to make classification of one j-rock band because sometimes you can hear songs of this band really hard and heavy and some are really poppy and easy-listen. So, that’s what we want. Our new single is hard rock music but who knows? Maybe the next will be more pop or even more hard! Like many Japanese band we don’t want standards of songs. We’d like to switch from hard music to pop music to pop-rock music. It’s like this. It’s fun. You never get tired of songs.
And can we expect live shows from you in Russia? Yeah, of course. I’m here also because of this. We’ll see. I can promise nothing but there are expectations and this live show will come and will come pretty soon. So, I hope to see all people I met in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Ykaterinburg because for us to come here is always beautiful.
What’s the most special thing about playing in Russia? The good thing is that when we arrive here, everybody is really kind. What’s amazing, it’s a far country but our fans know everything about us and they know and sing our songs. What is always incredibly great tabout playing here in Russia is that attention that our fans give to us. For us to come here and meet all these fans who give us all thes attention is really great. It’s always big pleasure to come here.
The band has changed a lot and that means not only working with the new producer or line-up changes. How can you estimate the way you changed as a band? Yeah. Now for the first time we can say that we’re four people and we decided that we know what we want that no one can stop us. I guess we have a more clear idea than ever. We took off a few elements which were not good for this band. There’re four of us and we and our stuff can work together really strong, as a union. This is the sensation that we can work more and more free. We’re happy. Even if it’s bad sometimes to lose some member of the band, to change the things, in the end you understand that it was better like this because when you’re in one band, you have to move together in one direction.
Are you going to go on working with Luminor? Of course, this collaboration’ll never end! But it depends not only on us, but also on him because he has many other things to do. Of course we plan to get back in Moscow and if it’s possible we will try to bring him again. He’s a good friend of this band so he’s always welcome and last time we saw that many people were happy to see him again on stage.
Speaking about music in general, what kind of music have you been listening to lately? I listen to a lot of music. In this period I’m listening to old music, like rock from 80-s, but not modern music. I’m a big fan of classic rock. I started to make music off my bedroom from listening to great metal bands of the 80-s, like Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Motley Crue. The fact that many bands now play this kind of music makes me happy because this music will be always great. It doesn’t mean what century you live in - it’s always good.
What do you feel before presenting a new material to the public, before this new beginning? I just keep my fingers crossed and hope that everyone will like it. Especially this time. We really hope that we’ll make a good impact by this video and by the song. There are some bands who don’t write their own songs, or don’t do much work because they have other people to do it. In DNR we work really a lot and really hard. Everything that comes out is a piece of us. Especially when we wrote this song, we worked a lot. There will also be a Japanese version of it. It’s half English, half Japanese. Like our favourite band X-Japan make the chorus of the song in English and the other part in Japanese. And we’ll make the general part in English and the chorus in Japanese. Many people say «you’re not j-rock, visual band because you don’t sing in Japanese». But it’s us that we want to record this song in half Japanese because it sounds really good. We want you to hear this language because we really like j-rock bands and so we decided that we must sing something in Japanese. When you sing in English it loses a bit of oriental style. But in Japanese it sound really visual, j-rock, so I’m proud of it.
How do you estimate the year 2010 for the band? A good year, because we did many things but it’s also a transition year. We had opportunities to make concerts. But it was a transition year because we prepared to make 2011 our year, to make it the most important year of our career. I hope 2011 will be much better and full of news.
And finally, your wishes to our readers, your fans. Hope they like the video. I hope I can meet them all at our next concert in Russia. Stay dreamer :)
