Columbia: We've grown up since the last album

The Canadian band Columbia are working at their new album now. The year 2010 was very fruitful for the talented musicians and now they’re planning to achieve even more! Bizarre Music had a talk with Columbia’s lead singer Kevin and asked him in details about the new album.

How do you estimate the year 2010 for Columbia?
2010 was a really amazing year for us, we did things that we had never done before. We had 3 tours and were on the radio more than ever. It really made people listen to what we were doing here in the Columbia world.

And now you're working at the new album. How's the work at it been so far?
It's been a lot of work for myself and Richard who is the other song writer in the band. We don't just want to write any old song - we want to write music that will get people really excited around the world. We believe that this album will be the one that breaks us in a lot of places. We have written 15 songs now and we hope to write another 20 before cutting them down to an album.

Wow! that's a lot! And speaking of choosing songs -  how do you usually pick up the songs for the album from a lot of them?
Richard and myself always seem to be on the same page so we don't fight over songs much. I'd say we do think about song lengths and lame stuff like that because at the end of the day we want it to get on radio and even if we write the best song ever and it’s 5 minutes, it won't be played. We just want to get heard by as many people as possible.

And how do you usually work at a song? How does  the work at it start?
There's two ways I'd say. One is Richard will write a complete a song and I will write the lyrics and we'll maybe make a few adjustments. Or I'lll be singing a chorus in my head and I will write the music and lyrics to that idea I had. Then Richard will come in and add to the song musically and write a solo or whatever

Getting back to the album -  in what way will this album be different from the previous?
We can play better and I can sing better! Playing so many shows this year really makes you a better musician. As for the sound we make the Rock songs more rock and the slow one's more intimate. Every thing is bigger and the musicianship is better. We feel this time we have more to say, we've grown up since the last album.

What are the main topics you're going to touch upon at it? What's the philosophy of the album?
On the last album we wanted to do a theme and it ended up with a bunch of good songs together, but not a theme. This Album - I have an idea for an album that spans a year in the life of someone. The ups and downs and you'll hear it as the album goes along. But until we pick the songs we'll have to see what happens. We wouldn't kick out a great song just to fit some crazy idea I have Haha.

When you think about the cover art, what's the main approach towards creating it? Who works at it usually?
Actually it was my brother. He is a graphics designer and knows me very well, so when we get together we are normally on the same page. I you look in the album sleeve it says join our ride in many ways. Like braille, Morris code and the front says "Join". Thats what our bodies are saying.

Is there any approximate date when we can expect the new album?
I'm thinking July. I Hope!
