Kevin Schallie (Columbia): We are all "Real music lovers"
Columbia have returned from their tour and are continuing work on their sophomore album. We couln't keep from asking them about both - the tour and the album. Read what Columbia lead singer Kevin has to say about these and many other things.
- You’re back from the tour. Tell us, how did it go? The Tour was great, every time we go on the road there are more people who come out to our shows and more people getting into the bands music so it's great. Canada is so big, it isn't always easy to get to so many different cities, it seems like we drive forever, but we love show nights and that makes it all worth while. - Have you got any especially memorable stories from it? Haha YES! But I can't talk about them because some of the guys in the band would kill me! We did go to a city in the middle of nowhere called Vulcan. You know like Vulcan's in STARTREK! They had a crazy store and a fake space ship. Some of the guys including me love Startrek stuff. - We know that musicians are usually very nervous before the shows. How do you prefer to calm down before your concerts and fight nervousness? I find that all of us are different. Myself and Richard both get sleepy and Brian and Jason don't seem too bad they have a few drinks. I think we've all done so many shows so it's hard to get nervous. I am just really excited before we get on! - How’s the work at the new material going? The new album writing is going very good. Myself and Richard do all of the writing and have been recording demo songs at the studio at my place for weeks now. The new songs will be a big step forward and we will be a really big sound, very stadium! We are so excited for people to hear them. - In what way will the new album be different from the previous one? What will be different is the maturity of our writing. Being a bit older and being on the road so much really helped us to write some new ideas and write songs we couldn't quite write on the first album. The sounds are big on the rock songs... Very BIG! - What’s your favourite thing about working in the studio? The studio is actually really hard work Richard and myself are real perfectionists so it's a lot of work trying to get what you think it should sound like on the recording. But there is so much satisfaction when you are finished and you have done something people can hear. - Where do you usually draw inspiration for your songs from? We really just let them come naturally and a lot of songs come from our love of the bands we listen to. On this new album I’ve been letting the people around me influence me on my writing. I live downtown so I see some interesting people and I like to think of what there doing as a story in a song. I don't think many songs will be written like that but it's good for the writing process. - What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to? For both Richard and me it was an Oasis concert in Toronto. 5th row, and the concert was sold out, it was amazing. They are an amazing band! - Could you describe each other in thee words? Haha 3 words to describe each guy in the band... That would get funny but we are all "Real music lovers" - And finally and traditionally – your wishes to the readers of our magazine.
