kyo (D'ERLANGER): To me the most impressive band is us!
You stood at the roots of visual rock. What was it back then and what changes happened during the time you’ve been in it? There was no category for visual rock back then. We didn't see many rock bands putting on make up and there were few markets for us. People said that we were mavericks.(I liked that label, though) But now it is acknowledged overseas as a part of Japanese culture. That is a big change.
What or who influenced your decision to start a band? Who were your musical influences then? I was shocked when I saw an American rock band when I was a elementary student. Since then, rock has been the coolest music to me. It was natural for me to start my own band. I was especially influenced by the Japanese rock band 44 MAGNUM. There are so many musicians I've admired: DAVID BOWIE,HANOI ROCKS, BAUHAUS etc...
There was a long break in your career. What did you do during these 16 years of D’ERLANGER silence? From your point of view, in what way did music in Japan change during these years? We all did different projects while we were apart. I'm currently doing a band named Die In Cries with Yukihiro, the drummer from L'Are-en-ciel, and also doing solo work. A big change during these 16 years is that we now have a market for rock bands in Japan. Before that we had almost no chance to be on a music TV show or sell a lot of CDs like idols did. Unfortunately, having a big rock market has created lots of fake rock bands which is a shame.
You shared the stage with many various musicians. Whose performances were the most memorable? All were very unique and memorable. But I'll always believe that D'ERLANGER is the best, so to me the most impressive band is us!
Speaking about your live performances. How can you describe them to someone who has never been to your concerts? It's hard to describe. Because we are just following our feelings. We think we can give audience a good feeling that they've never had before.
Were there any especially memorable stories from your live performances? April in 2007 at Hibiya Park Open Theatre,Tokyo,Japan. The first performance after the break.
You’ve got a big fan club "Kids Blue”. Could you tell about how it was formed? ・Original members card ・Fun club newsletters (3 times in a year) ・A web page just for club members ・Advance reservation for live performance and other events ・Events only for club members ・Selling goods only for club members
We have only domestic members now, but we are going to accept people from overseas in the future.
How do you prefer to keep in touch with your fans? We just want them to love our music.
How does usually the creation of a song for you begin? Do you first write lyrics or music? Music always comes first. We work together on the music.
What is the main source of inspiration for you music? A special vibration between the band members.
Have you got a favorite quote or a motto that inspires you in life? Dreams come true ,if you hope from your heart. THANX!! D’ERLANGER Vo.kyo
