OtherSide: We’re absolutely different from other Russian rock bands
OtherSide are talented and ambitious. They perform a high-quality rock with a violin in perfect English, which makes them different from others. They have a rich inner world and no bad habits. They're the ideal rock stars of the 21st century. Bizarre Music talked to OtherSide about their debut album, Moscow and all the joys of the recording process.
Hey guys! Tell our readers the story of how OtherSide were set up. How did the name OtherSide appear?
Hey! Today the questions will be answered by us - Arseny (Ryan), Alex (Alex) and maybe a few words will be heard from our art-director Alice, as the rest of the band are having holidays now. Ryan: - The procedure of choosing the name was quite non-ordinary. While chatting online via ICQ we were trying to find a good-sounding name. There were many variants that night. One of the variants was "KickOverboard". But as you see OtherSide has become our name... But as we’ve already started this conversation, I’d like to point out that sometimes the idea occurs to us to change the name. The reason is that the band with the same name exists abroad. Even several similar ones. It’s not really pleasant.
How does the name of the band reveal its character? Alex: - "OtherSide" means some different side. I think we’re absolutely different from other Russian rock bands. We’re completely opposite to them actually. We have different sound, try to look like western musicians, and aim at reaching great success! Ryan: - Oh yeeees =) Alex, you’re very modest as usual!!! :)
When and how did you discover the world of music for you? How did you start playing music yourself? Ryan: - Well, this world was discovered for us by our parents and we’re very grateful to them for it. It was they who several years ago showed this path to us. Music and creative path. Almost all of us have been making music since childhood. We’ve studied at art schools, music schools and some of us are now studying at Moscow art universities. Thus we’re practically homegrown in this world and we didn’t have to discover anything in it. =) Alex: - Yes, thanks a lot to our Parents! My Mother is a musician and when I was a child, she brought me to a music school. I was shown a small violin and when heard how it sounded like, I said I wanted to learn to play this instrument. So almost 15 years passed since that day and I’ve never regretted my choice! Thanks, Mom! =)
You’ve moved from Surgut to Moscow. Was it difficult to adapt in a new city? Ryan: -When you’ve got some goal ahead, you understand that there’ll be some difficulties. Of course moving to Moscow was a great step for us, but still we adapted to it rather fast. Maybe it was love at first sight! =) We fell in love with this city and it fell in love with us! That’s how the adaptation happened! Haha)
Why Moscow and not St. Petersburg? Ryan: - I’ve had a negative attitude towards St. Petersburg since childhood. I happened to be there at the most unpleasant time of the year. There were puddles and mud everywhere. The dullness put a lot of pressure on me. That’s where the negative attitude comes from. So if the band had decided to promote the music in St. Petersburg and not in Moscow, I would have stayed in Surgut. =) Just kidding! I would express my discontent, but I think it wouldn’t have happened. We seem to have similar tastes. Right, Alex? =) Alex: -Yes, it seems to me that there are more opportunities to succeed in Moscow, and first of all, we, as a band, should get acknowledgement in the capital. Besides I know that the sun shines only for 27 days in St. Petersburg and I’m not particularly happy about it as much depends on the weather. For example, I feel really active on sunny days in contrast to the days when dull weather invades my life and I become inexplicably lazy! =) Tell us, how is the recording of the debut album going? Ryan: - We made a break in the recordings at the beginning of summer after we’ve recorded the single "Change" from the upcoming album! Almost everyone has gone away on holidays to take some time off the hectic capital and gather strength before getting back to the studio. Can’t say the same about Alex and Pete though! I don’t envy them! They’ve experienced all the horrors of heat and smog which fell upon the city this summer. I’m really proud of them and everyone who’s survived this! Getting back to the question I’d like to point out that even being away from each other we managed to create some new material. Now we’re already counting the days till we meet again! On reuniting in Moscow the first thing we’ll do is running back to the studio to go on with what we started at the beginning of summer! And if you feel like, you can get these details from us in the next interview. :р Alex: - Actually smoke and heat were not so unbearable... I went through them rather calmly, but Pete was complaining that he was dying! =) The recordings will start again in September. We’ll try to finish it by winter or even earlier. Everything will depend on the circumstances.
What are the main sources of inspiration for this album? We all love contemporary western culture. That is the reason we decided to write our songs in English. So, we can surely enough say that western rock culture is our main source of inspiration. But we’re all humans in the end and sometimes emotions overwhelm and you feel enlightened! The new idea is born and you want to create more and more!
What do you like most of all about studio recordings? Ryan: - I like the process of creation. In most cases a special spirit of the song, its arrangement, is born in the studio...In the studio the song acquires its individual sound. This process of creation is like moments of happiness. It’s difficult to describe but musicians will understand me. Alex: - I personally like the process FROM the beginning and TO the end. The tastiest thing is the end of the work at some song =) and some minor completions...
How could you describe your life performance? Ryan: - Let our art-director Alice answer this question! She has a better view of what we are like onstage =))) Alex: - Yes, Alice, we’re very curious about what you’ll say about it =) Alice: - I like that the guys rock the crowd so easily and bring the atmosphere of a really crazy American party!) They’re always energetic and joyful and you just have rest and forget about dull humdrum life! And it wins people over)) They always give all of themselves to what they do and the audience like it. Who hears them once, comes twice!) What is the typical trait of OtherSide which makes you different from other bands? Ryan: - From many bands in Russia and even abroad we’re different because we have a violin in our band. In our arrangements it sometimes plays the leading part and sometimes a helping vocal part. I think it sounds interesting and non-ordinary, so come to our gig and make sure yourself! =)))) Alex: - In our band all musicians play several instruments and four of us are really talented vocally. Plus all of us have a rich and interesting inner world which is very important for a band! =) We don’t smoke, don’t drink alcohol and have no bad habits! And besides instead of wasting our time in bad companies, we prefer a cultural way of spending our time.
What are your plans for the future? Ryan: - First of all we plan to finish the album. And it will be clear after the end of the recordings whether it makes sense to distribute it physically. Not that we doubt how cool it is (hahaha) Nowadays it doesn’t really mean a lot to release a CD. Let’s thank for it the pirates of the 21st century!)) Besides we plan to shoot a video for one of the songs from the album... And speaking globally we plan to win Russia, USA, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and of course Tajikistan! =) Alex: - My dear friend Arseny! If we win Russia and USA, Tajikistan will surely hear about us =) Of course we want to be popular all over the world and be the only Russian band who reached this! Maybe we can sound naïve but we’re ready to fight for it! Aлиса: -We’ll do everything we can and with your help, of course =)) Let’s prove that there’s high-quality music in Russia.
Thanks to the magazine "Bizarre Music" for the interest in our band. See your readers and team soon! OtherSide.
